”We’ve updated our early upgrade and no commitment price points for smartphones and feature phones,” an AT&T spokesperson confirmed to tech blog BGR. “Only customers who are not yet upgrade eligible or who do not want to sign a contract are impacted. As mobile devices become more sophisticated, their cost goes up. This change reflects the increased costs, while still allowing us to offer customers the latest device before they qualify. We’re happy to discuss individual account and upgrade needs one-on-one with customers.”
With dual-core handsets already out on the market and quad-core devices coming in the near future, we can see how one would want to change their handset even sooner, but you might well reconsider your decision - even more so if youve joined the Droid camp.

Since so many of Samsung’s devices were found to be infringing it is likely a ban will be put in place soon on all these devices. Apple has until August 27th to file their requests, or how they would like things to take place. It drives me nuts that Apple has such power right now as I don’t think they deserve it. Once Apple files their requests, Samsung then has 2 weeks to respond, and then the hearing will take place on September 20th 2012.
Apple is claiming “irreparable hard,” but I don’t see how? They aren’t like HTC who is falling off the radar due to financial issues, so tell me, where did they suffer this so called ‘harm?’ It’s just a shame to see how poorly this case has turned out. I will fully admit that I was rooting to see a verdict like South Korea where they were both found guilty. However, more news will be reported on, but for now these are the next steps in the case, with an appeal already in hot pursuit.

HP Pavilion DM1 4304AU and Sleekbook 14
Updating something old. HP has released an updated the AMD powered version of its popular 11.6-inch Pavilion notebook. The new HP Pavilion DM1-4304AU has been fitted with a more powerful AMD E2-1800 Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) and Windows 8. This replaces the the HP Pavilion DM1-4029AU with a AMD E1-1200 accelerated processing released last August 2012.
The most significant thing about this release is the price. The HP Pavilion DM1-4304AU now is retailing for below 20K, at Php19,990, which HP hopes makes it more competitive with lower priced tablets.
But, the HP DM1 design is starting to show it age. The small 11.6-inch notebook weighing in at 3.2 pounds defined what an ultraportable was in 2010 and the first half of 2011. Today however, its 1.26 inch thick frame is starting to look chunky. The chunky frame does still pack a powerful battery rated for 7 hours of use,
Something new. HP has also released its Sleekbook 14 in the local market. Sleekbook is the term HP coined for Ultrabook like PCs which do not run on Intel Processors. The term "Ultrabook" is an Intel Trademark.
The Sleekbook 14, as it name indicated has a 14-inch display. It is powered by the same AMD E2-1800 APU and comes bundled with Windows 8 like the DM1-4304AU. It is priced a bit higher than the DM1-4304AU at Php22,990, but it does come with double the RAM of the DM1-4304AU, at 4 GB, and does come with a larger 750 GB hard drive.
The Sleekbook 14 following the trend of modern laptops is just 0.8-inches thin and weighs in at just a tad under 4-pounds.
The only thing in the Sleekbook 14 specifications which look worrisome is the 4-cell battery rated by HP at 4-hours of battery life.

Nokia is Now Officially Hopeless !
How many of us first started with Nokia? I’m willing to bet that for most of you, a Nokia device was your first mobile phone. Having ‘grown up’ with Nokia phones, I’ve since made the graceful hop to Sony Ericsson then to Android, and it’s never been better. That being said, I still think back fondly, almost like an adolescent love relationship that all of us have had – and still cherish in my heart the time we spent together. However, this broken love is just a remnant from the past, and I, and the market, have affirmed their love for Android. Not everyone has plunged into the ever growing world of Android though, as we are still hearing cases of people going to the extreme, and, in some instances, selling parts of their bodies, or even their virginity to get the latest iDevice.
The Nokia 3310 was my first phone. Unfortunately all that is left of it are entertaining memes on the internet. And, having outgrown dumb phones, Asians – who were once Nokia’s biggest supporters – are disappointed that present day Nokias haven’t brought their once famous durability to their latest devices.
After the 3310, I had the Nokia N95 and the Xpress music 5800, which in my opinion are the best that Nokia has ever produced. Nothing after that mattered. Nokia even had to swallow their pride and admit their failure with the N97. The N8 and N9 came and went – creating little ripples.
Fast forward to 2012, and Nokia is mired by problems more pressing and numerous than ever before. They recently lost their position in the great mobile phone shipment battle to Samsung, while their flagship Nokia Lumia 900 has received mixed reviews. Other problems include:

It is no surprise that the company is imploding. After all, they jumped from a burning platform to another burning platform.
Here’s why
Nokia Smartphones Don’t Command Value
By this, I meant the selling value. Nokia phones have always been the ‘cheaper’ alternative. In fact, in Asia, the price of WP7 devices halves in 6 months). This is a problem, because it means that they don’t make as much as competitors per smartphone. Being ‘cheaper’ also means that telcos would have to sell in higher volumes to match what they earn from Android and Apple. This is not a good picture.
But there is also a lingering question: will consumers pay less, if and when, access to Android and iPhones are equally affordable? There might be those who would choose Nokia’s ailing phones, but I believe that the number of people who would do this are few. Consequently, telcos shun WP7 because the demand is so low.
What’s worse is that the Ovi Store has been completely removed from Lumia phones. This means that most app revenues have to be shared with Microsoft. There aren’t ways to sideload apps apart from a developer unlocking tool. This may sound irrelevant, but not when you compare how much Apple is making from their apps alone.
Nokia’s decision in going with Windows Phone is costing them more than they bargained for. Plus, Nokia will have to start paying Microsoft for WP7 licensing fees (sooner or later). There is also a question where Elop said WP7 would allow Nokia to differentiate better than competitors. How is it better than Nokia phones running Android?
We will never find out. It’s too late to turn back the clock.
Nokia Products Don’t Inspire Desirability As Others
I consider the late Steve Jobs as a marketing person more than a tech genius. Today, almost every corporation worships the means and methods laid down by Jobs. Others look to the life of Jobs like the way they read Sun Tzu’s, Art of War.
Steve Jobs marketed well, and the results are obvious.
Which brings me to the next question – What is outstanding about Nokia’s advertising and marketing? Most of us will draw a blank when asked this question... That’s a marketing nightmare for Nokia’s marketing people.
That means that Nokia is either not doing enough marketing, or their marketing is so bad, that tech writers like me have no lasting impression of any part of it.
Nokia Is Not Fully Utilizing Their Tech
Nokia is a strong contender in terms of hardware. They were, if I may say, the best from yesteryear. However, hardware makes up a fraction in terms of consumer desirability. The premium smartphone market is the most rewarding, and there are consumers that are willing to pay good money to hold the latest devices in their hands from the tech worlds’ red carpet.
Symbian hasn’t delivered anything on par with iOS and Android, and WP7 is still wallowing slowly in infancy. WP7 isn’t a game changer the way Motorola introduced the original Motorola Droid years ago.
Instead, Nokia’s Lumia range is WP7 slapped on slightly better hardware... It shows.
It Is Too Late For Nokia To Jump On The Android Bandwagon
Let’s imagine for a moment that Nokia decided to go Android.
2012 has arrived and the Nokia has arrived with a quad core processor; packing an 8MP Carl Zeiss lens. Nokia also announced the Nokia Android Pureview – a 41MP, quad core beast that neither Samsung nor HTC has even come close to creating. Nokia Android users gain a whole world of access to apps via the Google Play Store. At that point, Elop has turned the company from the red into piles and piles of green cash. Nokia also holds the title as the manufacturer with the most mobile devices shipped with Samsung at a close second. Nokia continues to pressure HTC to continue bundling Beats Audio headphones with their devices as it launches their new Nokia Android XpressMusic range.
Sounds interesting?
Perhaps... Would Nokia have successfully differentiated themselves from the other phones in the segment – absolutely! Their superior hardware would shine and would put them way ahead of HTC, and possibly enable them to fight Samsung head on.
That hasn’t happened, and going Android now would be too late.
That would be spreading the fire.

Twitter and Instagram are pretty much saying Oh yeah ! at each other in increasingly louder volumes
The smartphone app Instagram turned off a feature Wednesday that allowed easier photo viewing for Twitter users, in a move that pushes the two popular tech platforms farther apart.
"Users are experiencing issues with viewing Instagram photos on Twitter," San Francisco-based Twitter said in a status update.
"This is due to Instagram disabling its Twitter cards integration, and as a result, photos are being displayed using a pre-cards experience," the message continued.
"So, when users click on Tweets with an Instagram link, photos appear cropped."
The change was evidently a move by Instagram, which has some 100 million users, to route photo viewers to its own website, where it has the potential to make money from ads or other mechanisms, instead of letting Twitter get the benefits.
Previously, Instagram pictures shared in messages "tweeted" from smartphones could be viewed unaltered at Twitter.
Instagram rose to stardom with the help of Twitter, but has distanced itself from the one-to-many text messaging service since being acquired by leading social network Facebook.
Facebook completed its acquisition of Instagram in September. The original price was pegged at $1 billion but the final value was less because of a decline in Facebooks share price.
Instagram last month was given a Facebook spin with the roll-out of online profiles that let people showcase themselves and photos theyve taken with the smartphone application.
People can share their profiles with whomever they wish as well as "follow" other Instagram users, commenting on or expressing "likes" for pictures.
The main point of Instagram is to share smartphone snaps, which can be enhanced with image filters to mimic historic types of film.

Dual SIM Droid Fight HTC Desire V versus Lenovo P700
Dual SIM phones are normally low cost budget phones, but HTC and Lenovo recently introduced two more upmarket dual SIM Android phones. These phones are so similar in terms of specifications that it really begs for a head to head.

Both the HTC Desire V and the Lenovo P700 run Android 4.0, with the HTC being skinned with the Sense UI and the Lenovo skinning its phone with its own flavor of Android. Both phones, the HTC Desire V and the Lenovo P700 have decently large 4-inch WVGA (480 x 800) displays. Both phones have 1 GHz processors, with the HTC running on an older generation Qualcomm S1 chipset and the Lenovo running on a MediaTek chipset. Again, both phones have 512 of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage (about 2.5 GB) user available. The internal storage of both phones is expandable via a MicroSD card.
Where the two phones differ is the price, the Lenovo P700 comes in at a amazingly low Php10,999 while the HTC Desire V command a much higher Php16,990 price. Can the HTC justify it higher sticker price?
HTC Desire Cs has some bells and whistles. Both phones have 5 MP autofocus cameras but only the HTC comes with a flash. The HTC phone is also bundled with 25 GB of Dropbox cloud storage for two years. Still those two features do not seem to be enough to justify the much higher price.
Lenovo P700 has some surprised of its own. The HTC Desire V has a large 1650 mAh battery. This really impressed us when this phone was launched. But the Lenovo P700 has an even larger 2500 mAh battery. The Lenovo P700 also packs a front camera, a feature missing on the HTC Desire V. Also if you buy the phone by August 15, 2012, you get a free 1000 mAh Belkin external battery pack.
In the end the Lenovo wins the specification wars, but the HTC Desire V is still the classier unit. Lenovo has built a very nicely speced phone. But it is a bit on the chunky and heavy side, at 12.8 mm thick and weighing in at a hefty 162 grams. That is the price to be paid for the large battery. While I am glad that Lenovo dropped the physical buttons in favor of more modern capacitive buttons, the overall design is still uninspired.
The HTC Desire V is the more stylish of the two, coming in a case just 9.3 millimeters thick. It is also a light 114 grams in weight, though the smaller battery is one reason for that.
Still 6K is a lot of money to pay for style. I think we have to go with the Lenovo P700 on this one.
